Privacy Policy

TechiesJournal respects the privacy of its readers. This Privacy Policy explains what information may be collected when you visit techiesjournal.com, create a reader account or subscribe to the newsletter, why it is collected, how it is used, how long it is kept, and the choices available to you.

TechiesJournal is a technology publication written and published by Prasad Kukkala.

1. Reading with and without an account

Much of TechiesJournal can be read without creating an account or directly providing personal information.

Some books, chapters, audio, downloads or other features may require a reader account, depending on how that content is set up. A reader account is optional unless you want to use those features.

2. Information we collect

Depending on how you use the website, limited information may be collected in the following ways.

Information you provide

If you contact TechiesJournal, we may receive information such as:

  • your name;
  • your email address;
  • the contents of your message; and
  • any other information you choose to provide.

This information is used only to review and respond to your communication and, where appropriate, maintain necessary correspondence.

Please do not send passwords, financial information, health records or other sensitive personal information through the contact form or email unless it is genuinely necessary.

Information collected automatically

When you access the website, the website infrastructure may automatically process technical information such as:

  • IP address;
  • browser and device type;
  • operating system;
  • requested pages;
  • referring page or website;
  • date and time of requests; and
  • technical information required to deliver, secure and troubleshoot the website.

Server and security logs may contain some of this information.

We use this information primarily to operate the website, maintain security, diagnose technical problems and understand general website usage.

Information connected with a reader account

If you create a reader account, we may store:

  • your verified email address;
  • your display name;
  • when your account was created and last changed;
  • your preferred reading language and preferred audio voice;
  • the sign-in methods you have linked to your account;
  • articles and books you have saved;
  • your reading progress in books;
  • a record of books you have downloaded through your account, where that applies; and
  • limited records of account and sign-in activity, described in section 6.

Information connected with the newsletter

If you subscribe to the newsletter, we store your email address and a record of your subscription, as described in section 5.

3. Reader accounts and signing in

We use reader account information to let you sign in, to give you access to content and downloads that need an account, to provide My Library, to let you resume reading, to remember your preferences and to keep your account secure.

Creating a reader account does not subscribe you to the newsletter. The two are separate.

Email one-time codes

You can sign in with a six-digit one-time code sent to your email address. A code expires after 10 minutes and is stored only in a hashed form, which means TechiesJournal does not keep a readable copy of it. To help prevent abuse and unauthorized access, we also process limited security information when codes are requested and used.

Google and Microsoft

Where enabled, you can sign in with Google or Microsoft. When you do, TechiesJournal receives a stable account identifier and the profile information the provider supplies for sign-in, such as your name and verified email address. TechiesJournal does not receive your Google or Microsoft password. The provider's own privacy practices also apply to the sign-in step.

If the email address at Google or Microsoft changes, your TechiesJournal contact email does not change automatically. You can change your contact email from your account after confirming the new address with a code.

My Library and reading progress

If you are signed in, you can save articles and books and resume reading where you left off. For books, we store the chapter you most recently reached. This information is used to provide those features. It is not used for behavioral advertising or to build recommendation profiles.

Downloads and access records

When a book download is delivered to you through your account, TechiesJournal may record that it happened, which book it was, the edition and language, and when. These records help us understand which books are being used and keep a record of delivery. They are kept for no more than 24 months. If a reader account is deleted, the link between these records and that account is removed, and the remaining records are not used to identify the former reader.

4. Embedded and external content

Articles may contain links to other websites or embedded content such as videos, source material, code examples or other third-party resources.

When you choose to interact with third-party content, the third party may receive technical information about your visit and may use cookies or other technologies according to its own privacy practices.

TechiesJournal does not control the privacy practices of external websites. You should review the privacy policies of those services if you want to understand how they process your information.

Automated processing of public source material

To prepare editorial drafts such as the Daily Tech Digest, TechiesJournal's own servers automatically read publicly available material from a fixed list of approved publishers (for example, official vendor announcements, security advisories and news feeds). Short extracts of that material may be processed by an automated language-model service to help draft summaries that an editor then reviews before anything is published. This processing involves only public source material and never any information about readers of this website; readers do not connect to those publishers or to the language-model service by reading TechiesJournal.

The audio narration of articles is generated in advance from published article text by a speech service. It does not involve information about readers.

5. Newsletter

The newsletter is optional and separate from reader accounts. Anyone can subscribe without an account, and having an account does not subscribe you.

New subscriptions use double opt-in. We send a confirmation email to the address you entered. Opening the link in that email only shows a confirmation page. Your subscription starts only when you press the confirm button on that page. If you did not ask for it, you can ignore the email.

The newsletter does not use open tracking or click tracking.

Every newsletter email includes an unsubscribe link that does not require you to sign in. The link opens a page where you confirm that you want to unsubscribe, and nothing changes until you press the button. Some mail apps also offer their own one-click unsubscribe button, which unsubscribes you at once.

What we keep depends on where your subscription stands:

  • Waiting for confirmation: we keep your email address while we wait. If you do not confirm, the request is removed 30 days after the most recent confirmation email.
  • Subscribed: we keep your email address for as long as you stay subscribed, so we can deliver the newsletter.
  • Unsubscribed, or stopped after a delivery problem such as a bounce or a complaint: we remove your email address. We may keep a minimal record that cannot be read as an address and that is tied to your address by a secret key, together with the status and the date, so that TechiesJournal does not send to you again by mistake.

If you unsubscribed, you can subscribe again at any time by completing a new double opt-in. A subscription stopped after a delivery problem is not restarted by signing up again.

You can ask for full erasure of your newsletter record through the contact page. That removes the minimal record as well, which means TechiesJournal will no longer remember that you had unsubscribed.

6. Security records

To detect abuse, investigate failed or suspicious sign-ins and protect accounts, TechiesJournal keeps limited security records of events such as a code being requested, a failed attempt, a sign-in, a change of sign-in method or a change of contact email. These records can contain identifiers that are pseudonymous rather than anonymous: they are derived from your email address or connection and are not readable as such, but they are not guaranteed to be impossible to link back to you. They are kept for up to 90 days.

7. Analytics

TechiesJournal uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to understand aggregate readership, such as how many pages are viewed, how many visits there are, which pages are popular, which sites refer readers here, the country a visit comes from, and the kind of browser or device used. It works through a small script that Cloudflare adds to our pages, and it does not use advertising or cross-site tracking.

We do not use analytics information to make decisions about individual readers, and we do not use any other analytics or advertising tool on TechiesJournal. This is separate from the newsletter, which uses no open or click tracking.

8. Cookies and similar technologies

TechiesJournal aims to keep its use of cookies and similar technologies limited.

If you sign in, the site sets a sign-in cookie that is strictly necessary for you to stay signed in. A reader sign-in lasts up to 30 days unless you sign out or end your sessions. While you are signing in or confirming a change to your account, the site also sets short-lived cookies that last no more than 15 minutes to keep that step secure. Signing in does not turn on advertising or analytics cookies.

The site also remembers some choices in your browser's local storage: your colour theme, your text size, and, for the article audio player, your accent and voice choice, playback speed and the point you reached in an article. That information stays in your browser and is not sent to TechiesJournal, except that if you are signed in, your chosen audio voice is also saved to your account so it follows you between devices.

Some other technologies may be necessary for the operation, security or performance of the website. TechiesJournal does not set advertising cookies. Cloudflare Web Analytics, described in section 7, is the only analytics service in use. If TechiesJournal later adds anything that needs your consent under the law that applies to you, it will ask first and this policy will be updated.

You can also control cookies through your browser settings. Blocking certain necessary technologies may affect parts of the website, including signing in.

9. How we use personal information

Information collected through TechiesJournal may be used to:

  • deliver requested pages and content;
  • operate reader accounts, My Library and downloads;
  • send sign-in codes, account notices and, if you subscribed, the newsletter;
  • operate, maintain and secure the website;
  • detect abuse, attacks and technical problems;
  • understand general website performance and readership;
  • respond to messages and enquiries;
  • investigate errors or security incidents;
  • comply with applicable legal obligations; and
  • protect the legitimate rights and interests of TechiesJournal and its readers.

We do not use personal information for unrelated purposes without an appropriate basis for doing so.

10. Selling personal information

TechiesJournal does not sell personal information.

TechiesJournal does not operate as a data broker.

If the website's business model or advertising practices change in a way that materially affects how personal information is handled, this Privacy Policy will be updated.

11. Advertising and affiliate links

TechiesJournal currently focuses on independent technical publishing.

If advertising, sponsorships or affiliate links are introduced, they will be appropriately identified, and this Privacy Policy will be updated where those services involve additional data collection or tracking.

Editorial content will not be presented as independent analysis when it has been paid for or materially influenced by a sponsor.

12. Sharing information with service providers

Limited information may be processed by companies that provide infrastructure or technical services required to operate TechiesJournal, such as:

  • website hosting;
  • content delivery and security services, including Cloudflare;
  • encrypted backup storage, which is provided by Backblaze;
  • Google and Microsoft, when you choose to sign in with them;
  • Microsoft (Microsoft 365 and Exchange Online), which sends our sign-in codes, account notices and newsletters through Microsoft Graph from our own domain, using the TechiesJournal mailbox [email protected];
  • Cloudflare Web Analytics, described in section 7; and
  • monitoring and security services.

These providers may process information only as necessary to provide their services or as otherwise permitted by their own applicable terms and privacy obligations.

Information may also be disclosed when reasonably necessary to comply with law, legal process, protect the website or its users, investigate abuse, or defend legal rights.

13. International processing

TechiesJournal is accessible internationally, and some technology providers used to operate the website, to sign you in, to send email or to store backups may process or store information outside the country in which you live. For example, the email data that Microsoft 365 holds for TechiesJournal, including the address a message was sent to, is stored in India. Google, Cloudflare and Backblaze may also process information outside your country. Where that happens depends on the provider and how its service is set up.

Privacy and data-protection laws differ between jurisdictions. Where applicable, reasonable measures are used to ensure that personal information handled by service providers receives appropriate protection.

14. How long we keep information

We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, including operational, security, legal and record-keeping requirements. In particular:

  • Reader account information, including your preferences, saved items and reading progress, is kept while your account exists.
  • One-time sign-in codes are removed within 24 hours after they expire.
  • Security records are kept for up to 90 days.
  • Newsletter requests that are not confirmed are removed 30 days after the most recent confirmation email.
  • Your email address is kept for as long as you are subscribed to the newsletter.
  • After you unsubscribe, or after a delivery problem stops the newsletter, your email address is removed and a minimal record is kept until you subscribe again or ask for full erasure.
  • Download and access records are kept for no more than 24 months.
  • Contact correspondence may be retained while the enquiry remains relevant.
  • Server and security logs are kept for about four weeks.
  • Microsoft keeps delivery records for the email we send (sender, recipient, time and delivery status) for up to 90 days.
  • The TechiesJournal website itself does not keep a copy of the emails it sends. Microsoft 365 does, however, store a copy of each sent message in the Sent Items folder of the sending mailbox. Those copies are held under that mailbox's current Microsoft 365 retention settings, and we do not currently delete them on a fixed schedule.
  • Records required for legal or security purposes may be retained for longer where necessary.

Backups are encrypted and kept on a rotation of daily, weekly and monthly copies. Information that has been deleted can therefore remain in backup copies until they age out, which can take up to about twelve months.

Information that is no longer reasonably required will be deleted, anonymized or allowed to expire according to the systems in which it is stored.

15. Deleting your account

You can delete your reader account from your account page. We ask you to confirm with a one-time code sent to your email address first. There is no waiting period.

When you delete your account:

  • your account, your linked sign-in methods, your saved items, your reading progress and your preferences are removed;
  • every device you were signed in on is signed out;
  • limited pseudonymous security records can remain for up to 90 days;
  • download and access records stay only without a link to your account, for the rest of their 24 months; and
  • copies in backups age out as described in section 14.

The newsletter is separate. When you delete your account you can choose to unsubscribe from the newsletter at the same time. If you do not, your newsletter subscription stays in place until you unsubscribe.

16. Information security

Reasonable technical and organizational safeguards are used to protect information processed through TechiesJournal.

No website or Internet transmission can be guaranteed to be completely secure. Accordingly, TechiesJournal cannot guarantee absolute security of information transmitted or stored electronically.

17. Your privacy choices and rights

From your account page you can change your display name and preferences, change your contact email, add or remove Google and Microsoft sign-in, sign out of all devices, download a copy of your account data and delete your account. The download contains the information you can see in your account. It does not contain security records. You can unsubscribe from the newsletter from any newsletter email or from your account page.

Depending on where you live and the privacy laws that apply, you may also have rights concerning your personal information, including rights to:

  • ask whether we hold personal information about you;
  • request access to that information;
  • request correction of inaccurate information;
  • request deletion where applicable;
  • withdraw consent where processing depends on consent;
  • object to or restrict certain processing where applicable; and
  • raise a concern about how your information has been handled.

These rights are subject to applicable legal limitations and exceptions.

To make a privacy request, including a request for full erasure of your newsletter record or for newsletter information, use the contact details below. We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling certain requests.

18. Children's privacy

TechiesJournal publishes general educational and technical material and is not designed as a service that intentionally collects personal information from children.

If you believe that a child has provided personal information through the website in circumstances where it should not have been collected, please contact us so the matter can be reviewed.

19. External links

TechiesJournal contains links to websites operated by other organizations.

A link is provided for reference or convenience and does not make TechiesJournal responsible for that website's privacy, security, availability or content. External services are governed by their own policies.

20. Changes to this policy

TechiesJournal may update this Privacy Policy when the website, its technology, its services or applicable privacy requirements change.

The "Last updated" date at the top of this page identifies the most recent revision.

Material changes affecting how readers' personal information is handled will be reflected in an updated version of this policy.
